Hello June.

Welcome June.

I know. We’re halfway thru the year. But let’s choose to refocus on the positive. With June being here; we can consider this a starting point to our summer18. And we all know how you finish something; is based largely on how well you start. So despite the fact that there is no new Beyonce to soundtrack summer18 (ala Lemonade in Summer16); don’t let that distract you from living your best life this summer. Here are 10 things to do to propel you into a bomb summer 18.

1. Set Your Alarm Clock For Earlier: Dont kill the messenger. Just think about it; waking up a bit earlier to hear the birds chirping, feel the cool breeze against your skin, and just taking a moment to breath and appreciate the beautiful weather before your day is started. It can be a start to a perfect day; which adds up to a perfect summer.

2. Get SunKissed: Don’t delay that summer tan and glow for when you go on vacay. Grab some sun and get that beautiful sun glow now. It’ll give you all the feels for the summer; and put you in the mood to have optimal funners.

3. Water goes UP: Yup drink more water. This is a no brainer. It’s hotter, our bodies need more fluid. But not only our bodies..also our skin..our nails..our hair. All of that thrives on good water intake.

4. Ditch The Gym Membership: Take your workout talents to the outdoors. No need for a unnecessary gym bill. Go running…hiking…climbing…whatever!

5. Go Earthing: After a cold winter; this is a great time to reconnect with nature and the earth. Take off your sandals and dig your feet into a field of grass. Earthing is a practice said to keep us grounded and connected to earth. Also; some claim it can heal some medical ailments.

6. Remove All Unwelcomed Body Hair: Time to clean up and remove all the hairy situations that we don’t plan on carrying with us through the summer. While some may feel keeping things hairy is okay..just consider the fact that hair equals, sweat, and sweat equals body oder. We’re better than that.

7. Take In The Tunes: Summer is all about a music festival. This is a great time to scheme on all the music festivals you plan to attend this summer. Make a list and start saving those coins.

8. Go Outside: Not necessarily to exercise like I mentioned earlier, but to enjoy the sun and sunlight. Don’t let a day pass by without feeling the sun on your skin.

9. Get BBQ Ready: Learn a new drink recipe or a new yummy recipe in general that will kill at the BBQs you’ll be attending this summer.

10. Plan and Execute Your Fashion Moves: Last but certainly not least, is my fave thing to do, plan your fashion moments for this summmer. Have a few casual; semi casual and dressy outfits planned and ready to go.

Friend Or Foe: The Tragic Death of Kenneka Jenkins

Yesterday while perusing my snapchat; I caught wind of a story developing out of Chicago. It was about the young girl found dead in a walk in freezer. The more details I discovered about the story, the more disturb I became.
It seems the young girl, named Kenneka Jenkins; a gorgeous brown skinned, petite, 19-year- old; life came to a tragic end after celebrating her friends’ birthday in a hotel room kickback. While, many details remain unclear, one thing that is clear is that this story is messy, and just heartbreaking. According to current rendition of the story, Kenneka was so inebriated that she staggered into a walk in freezer and presumably could not get out. Many have taken to the internet to conform theories and “solve” the case. However out of respect for her family, I will not add my version of what I think happened to that young lady. Only, the Lord and the people involved really knows, everything else is just reckless speculation.
However, what I would like to discuss are the many alarming occurrences that took place based off of the facts that we have been privy to from the social media post, and Facebook lives of the people with Kenneka in her final hours alive, that are making rounds.

First, as a mother, I pray, that we as mothers to young beautiful vulnerable females, understand that our girls are at risk. It was not even a year ago that the hash tag #MissingDCGirls trended based on oddly high number of missing girls in DC. Young African woman are disappearing at an alarming rate in this country. A member of the city council declared an “epidemic” of missing girls. Knowing that to be a fact, makes it more than okay to be that overbearing parent that sets very clear perimeters for our girls to live within. I’m not in anyway saying that Kenneka’s mom could have done anything any differently; I’m sure she never thought her daughter going to her best friend’s birthday party would result in her child’s death. However, what I am saying is, we as mothers have to be more vigilant over our daughters more than ever before. We have to take precautions and measures we never had to in recent history. We just do. Know where they’re going, with who, when they’ll be back, have other mothers numbers, friends numbers, drop them off, wait outside, drive around the block while you wait, text every 30 mins, or else I coming in to find you!

Secondly, I won’t write this and pretend like I have never been a carefree, boundary pushing teenager. In fact, I think this story resonates so much because I can remember being in some pretty sketchy situations alongside my friends as well as a youngin. Unlike, poor Kenneka, I survived (all glory to God). However, when I think about what made me escape the same fate as this sweet girl, the fact is that I grew up in a time when people weren’t entirely shitty. Even the bad guys had somewhat of a conscience in my time. Fast forward to these days, people are ruthless. The mixture of being high off all sorts of drugs, pills, etc; coupled with a dog eat dog mentally, this generation is just different. As I watched the Facebook live, the look on some of those kids faces are scary. Nothing phases them, or bothers them. Or at least that’s the way they want to appear. The chase of “turning up” supersede all moral judgement. It’s sad and scary at the same time to bare witness to.

Lastly, the question that a lot of people are asking this morning is; were any of those three or  four other girls Kenneka Jenkins with, really her friends? We don’t know what happened, but the fact that she was with four other girls, and no one knows what happened is disgusting. Let’s go with the version that these girls are offering and assume that they really don’t know what happened to this young lady. That in itself is a crime. We are so quick to call eachother “sis”, and egg  eachother on when it’s turn up twerking time; but we let things like this just happen?! If Kenneka was as drunk as is being reported, her more alert/sober friends should of took reign and gotten her to safety.

I just needed to get these things off my chest, because like I said this story has me bothered. This young girls life did not have to end like this. I pray her family, especially her mother finds some peace. May her soul rest in perfect peace.

Sidenote: I neglected to touch on the young men involved because, we don’t know what happened. I only touched on that of which there is evidence to support. Again, I don’t want to speculate. However, if those young men were involved the moral of this story is not ‘”friend or foe”, but rather “raise men that don’t rape and kill girls”. smh!!!

#TackleItTuesday: 5 Tips For Spring Cleaning

Spring has sprung, and after this last leg of old man winter that dumped over 4 feet of snow in my area,  I am welcoming Spring with arms wide open. But now that the sun will be shining extra bright, it will surely reveal all the indiscretions that the grey gloomy sky’s of the winter hid. So, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get busy with the Spring Cleaning duties.

Here are some handy tips to make Spring Cleaning all the more effective:

Cleaning the Refrigerator:

A new season upon us means, a new eating plan. In the winter we crave comfort food. In the Spring, we  should begin eating lighter and fresher. First empty the fridge, and remove all the contents. Decide if you’re going to dump that bottle of mayo, or keep that container of vegan butter. If your contents are a little dirty on the outside containers, wipe them down.  Remove the drawers, and shelves and wash separately with warm water and soap. Wipe off  the walls and back of fridge with one part water, one part vinegar solution. Dry the drawers and shelves off and return them to the fridge along with the other contents. Clean the outside of the fridge.

Cleaning the Closet:

Cleaning out the closet for Spring Cleaning, can be complex. It requires good judgement, and the removal of emotional attachment. Easier said then done, right? Well here are some pretty basic questions you should be asking yourself when you hit that ‘keep it or chuck it’ dilemma:

Does it fit? (Not will it fit in a few months or after I lose these 15 pounds; does it fit now? )If not, chuck it or donate it.

Will I ever wear this again? If not, chuck or donate.

Lastly, if it is damaged, is it repairable at a reasonable cost to you?

Now that you have removed all the unnecessary clutter from your closet, it time to organize the remaining items. It helps to have all hangers facing the same direction. For clothes and other items that won’t be used daily, utilize storage bins such as this one:

If you have a load of shoes to organize, consider investing in a few clear shoe-boxes like this:

Dusting:

The dust builds in the winter. Even if you have been keeping up with the daily dusting  routine during the winter months, you’ll see that there were spots missed. Use a microfiber cloth to remove the tiniest of dust mites. For hard to reach spots, grab am extended dust stick like this one:

Shining the Windows:

Remove any build up of dust from around the corners and window sill, with a brush or broom. Now grab a sponge and a little soapy water (the fewer suds the better), and wash the window. Now wipe away the excess water with a squeegee, using a reverse S pattern, from top to bottom. Using old crumpled newspaper, buff the window for optimal shine!

Mattress:

mattress

During the winter months, your mattress endured a lot. It’s where you laid, when you were hit with the flu and more. This is a great time to disinfect it and remove all the dead-skin that has accumulated. Start by removing the linens and toss in the laundry. Let the mattress sit and air for a little while. Toss some baking soda on the mattress, and grab an upholstery vacuum  like the one below, and suck up the baking soda.

For lasting fresh scent, add scented dryer sheets to the mattress before placing the fitted sheets  or mattress cover back on.
