Hello June.

Welcome June.

I know. We’re halfway thru the year. But let’s choose to refocus on the positive. With June being here; we can consider this a starting point to our summer18. And we all know how you finish something; is based largely on how well you start. So despite the fact that there is no new Beyonce to soundtrack summer18 (ala Lemonade in Summer16); don’t let that distract you from living your best life this summer. Here are 10 things to do to propel you into a bomb summer 18.

1. Set Your Alarm Clock For Earlier: Dont kill the messenger. Just think about it; waking up a bit earlier to hear the birds chirping, feel the cool breeze against your skin, and just taking a moment to breath and appreciate the beautiful weather before your day is started. It can be a start to a perfect day; which adds up to a perfect summer.

2. Get SunKissed: Don’t delay that summer tan and glow for when you go on vacay. Grab some sun and get that beautiful sun glow now. It’ll give you all the feels for the summer; and put you in the mood to have optimal funners.

3. Water goes UP: Yup drink more water. This is a no brainer. It’s hotter, our bodies need more fluid. But not only our bodies..also our skin..our nails..our hair. All of that thrives on good water intake.

4. Ditch The Gym Membership: Take your workout talents to the outdoors. No need for a unnecessary gym bill. Go running…hiking…climbing…whatever!

5. Go Earthing: After a cold winter; this is a great time to reconnect with nature and the earth. Take off your sandals and dig your feet into a field of grass. Earthing is a practice said to keep us grounded and connected to earth. Also; some claim it can heal some medical ailments.

6. Remove All Unwelcomed Body Hair: Time to clean up and remove all the hairy situations that we don’t plan on carrying with us through the summer. While some may feel keeping things hairy is okay..just consider the fact that hair equals, sweat, and sweat equals body oder. We’re better than that.

7. Take In The Tunes: Summer is all about a music festival. This is a great time to scheme on all the music festivals you plan to attend this summer. Make a list and start saving those coins.

8. Go Outside: Not necessarily to exercise like I mentioned earlier, but to enjoy the sun and sunlight. Don’t let a day pass by without feeling the sun on your skin.

9. Get BBQ Ready: Learn a new drink recipe or a new yummy recipe in general that will kill at the BBQs you’ll be attending this summer.

10. Plan and Execute Your Fashion Moves: Last but certainly not least, is my fave thing to do, plan your fashion moments for this summmer. Have a few casual; semi casual and dressy outfits planned and ready to go.

Im BACK.

Hi everyone.

Thank you so much for continuing to support  Healthy Urban Girl blog. Your readership means everything to me. I will be making more updates to the blog starting this week. Before I do that I just wanted to give you guys an update as to what I’ve been up to in my personal life. Of course I have been knee deep  with my favorite role: motherhood. I’ve been growing as a mother and allowing myself to learn new things as a mom and really just as a feminine vessel in general.

Sometimes life can get a little difficult and a little hectic and it doesn’t leave much time for doing things that we really love such as updating our blog however I realize that updating this blog is one of my priorities because it says really give me a peace of mind.

Along with being a mom I’ve been growing in myself as well. I have been getting to know myself better. Investing time in self love acts to heal my heart chakra. Something that was necessary after the dissolve of my marriage/longest relationship.

Also, Lately I have been holding myself accountable in every role I play in life whether it’s mother, daughter, employee, business owner etc.  Accountability is important. By that I mean it’s not enough to just show up. It’s important to live in the moment and embrace the task and the roles that we have in our lives. Often times you can feel like you’re just existing and not necessarily experiencing. I really tried over the this past year to immerse myself in the things that are important to me. I plan on sharing more of my journey right here. So stay tuned.  So there you have it that’s pretty much what I’ve been up to.

Like I said, I do plan on updating the blog more often so definitely check back and of course continue to support our social media platforms our Facebook page (which has  almost 6500 follows and likes- I’m so thankful and grateful)  and our growing Instagram (healthyurbangirl_hug)  page.

Before I go I just want to bring you guys up to date one of the things that we do around here at HUG -Product Review. We try all sort of different products that can be beneficial to tge average Healthy Urban Girl. We try it and let you know the outcome before you spend your good coins. Okkuurrrr.

Keep in mind these products were sent to me for no cost or little cost for the purpose of trying them out and sharing them with you guys

First I have mini figures which really was a bag of Legos…..many Legos. These are for the little ones and my little one  thoroughly enjoyed playing with them. They kept her busy for quite some time.  I will say as a mom my concern was that she would put them in her mouth but my little one is a little older (she’s 7yrs old), so she knows better. But if you have younger ones I will definitely be cautious of that because they are tiny and there is a lot of them, so definitely be cautious about stepping on them also. No one likes to step on Lego pieced….ouch.  If you can find a way to let your older toddler or older  little kid play with them  on a desk and self-controlled environment then yeah they’re fun and  keep the little ones quiet occupied.

Something else that I have been trying is this Pure Pink Clay Mask. Let me just say this clay mask is amazing. If you follow me on social media, you probably know I am challenging myself for 2018 to have good, healthy skin and this pink clay mask really has helped me to stay consistent. It’s a very gentle clay mask. It’s like doesn’t feel overwhelming, it doesn’t feel like a process . You literally put a little bit in a jar put a little water in it to make it like a paste, and spread it on your face leave it on there for about 15 minutes and wipe it off with a warm wash clean washcloth. You can literally feel it pulling out the impurities. Because it’  so light, its great for people with sensitive skin.

‘Sup February: 5 Things To Do Now To Beat The Winter Blues

Start Planning Your Spring Activities:

navy-pier-7

Planning ahead, will allow us the opportunity to look ahead to the future; at a  time when the weather will be warmer, and the earth will come alive again. Just the thought makes me wanna smile; except I can’t right now, because IM COLD bruh! Need some ideas. No prob.  If you’re in NYC around March, take in the annual Cherry Blossom exhibit at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, or if in Chicago, go and play at the Navy Pier. Just do a quick search and see what’s popping in your city come Spring, and begin to pencil in the fun.

Get Creative:

Likely, this time of year, once we’re in the house, it’s usually where we stay, until obligations pull us into the cold outdoors. Well, with so much time being spent in the house, make use of it. Redecorate a room, or reorganize your closet. Perhaps, we’ve had it wrong all along; “Spring Cleaning”, should take place in the winter, freeing us up to enjoy the Spring weather, duhhhhh! Take a look at this youtube channel for some interior design ideas.

Pamper Yourself!

In the winter we tend to throw caution away when it comes to our body. We allow our pedis to grow out a little longer than normal; we may just let that darn layer of hair to inhabit our legs and other places, just a tee wee bit longer than we should. Well, I am here to advocate for treating our bodies like the temple of goddess that it truly is, even this time of year. This time of year, it’s great to keep our skin moisturized, our hair healthy, and our bodies prepped for warmer weather. Don’t let this cold fool you boo. Before you know it, warmer months will be here and it’ll be time to show all that’s been tucked away in big warm boot, and big winter coats. Stay ready, so you aint got to get ready!

Mental Escape.

Read a good book.  Or ten. Reading is a great way to escape the winter blues and find yourself smack dabbed in the middle of a warm island, falling in love with tall dark glass of something sexy, only your imagination can cook up. Or you can indulge in a good biography about Abraham Lincoln if your anything like me. Either way, the idea is escape. And a good book always transport us just long enough to enjoy.

Find You Psalm-body:

This one is for the singles. This time of year, it’s tempting to get into a temporary romance, as it is after all ‘cuffing season’. Well, that can get tricky if you’re waiting for that special someone , and not just willing to settle for anyone. Don’t succumb to the pressure of getting boo’d up this cold season, just to have a warm body to be next to. Rather, take time to read, watch and indulge on content that leads you to  what God’s intentions are for your love life, for all seasons of your life. Pastor Michael Todd, from the Transformation Church, has a great series called #RelationshipGoals, that is sure to give you great tips on intentional purpose-filled relationships and more importantly the importance of this season called single.

5 Tips to Maintain Well Moistured Healthy Skin All Winter ’18

Winter weather blows for the skin.

Between the irrationally  cold weather and low humidity every ounce of moisture is sucked  away from our skin every second of every day; in these brutal winter months.  Playing with this harsh winter weather is literally like playing with fire for the skin, since dry skin can easily lead to cracking and bleeding skin. No ma’am.

A skin moisturizing routine is very necessary this rigid time of year; to replenish what the natural  elements removes; leaving our skin thirsty for moisture.  Think of your skincare winter routine as an act of #SelfLove.

Follow these 5 easy #SelfLove skincare winter tips to maintain well moistured healthy skin all winter ’18.

1. WASH IN LUKEWARM WATER

I know; what’s better than a hot shower in the winter?! But when you can, wash (especially your face) with lukewarm water. This will add well needed hydration without stripping your skin’s natural oils away.

2. MOISTURIZE IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS

Seal in moisture by applying a good moisturizure right after you wash while your skin is damp. Applying while the skin is still damp increases the products ability to absorb and last longer.
3. CHOOSE MOISTURIZER CAREFULLY

Speaking of moisturizing, pick a good moisturizer. Some over-the-counter moisturizers have petroleum-based ingredients that can actually further dry your skin in the winter months. Be sure to choose a smart formula that has natural, nourishing ingredients. Go for an oil-based rather than a water-based solution, as it’s more likely to help your skin retain moisture in the winter. I love natural oils like jojoba, hemp, and a little coconut oil.

4. DRINK UP

This one is easy….think less coffee…more water. Really that simple.  Water is your friend. Drink it up. While you can drink your water; don’t be afraid to eat it too. Add more moisture friendly foods to your diet like watermelon; grapes; oranges.

5. OVERNIGHT MOISTURIZE

Dryer areas like hands, feet, elbows, and knees have thin skin and tend to lose moisture faster than more meatier areas of the body. To combat this try doing overnight deep moisturizing on these areas with a deep conditioning lotion or balm.

Follow these simple steps and expect to be on your way to well moisturized skin all winter.

Friend Or Foe: The Tragic Death of Kenneka Jenkins

Yesterday while perusing my snapchat; I caught wind of a story developing out of Chicago. It was about the young girl found dead in a walk in freezer. The more details I discovered about the story, the more disturb I became.
It seems the young girl, named Kenneka Jenkins; a gorgeous brown skinned, petite, 19-year- old; life came to a tragic end after celebrating her friends’ birthday in a hotel room kickback. While, many details remain unclear, one thing that is clear is that this story is messy, and just heartbreaking. According to current rendition of the story, Kenneka was so inebriated that she staggered into a walk in freezer and presumably could not get out. Many have taken to the internet to conform theories and “solve” the case. However out of respect for her family, I will not add my version of what I think happened to that young lady. Only, the Lord and the people involved really knows, everything else is just reckless speculation.
However, what I would like to discuss are the many alarming occurrences that took place based off of the facts that we have been privy to from the social media post, and Facebook lives of the people with Kenneka in her final hours alive, that are making rounds.

First, as a mother, I pray, that we as mothers to young beautiful vulnerable females, understand that our girls are at risk. It was not even a year ago that the hash tag #MissingDCGirls trended based on oddly high number of missing girls in DC. Young African woman are disappearing at an alarming rate in this country. A member of the city council declared an “epidemic” of missing girls. Knowing that to be a fact, makes it more than okay to be that overbearing parent that sets very clear perimeters for our girls to live within. I’m not in anyway saying that Kenneka’s mom could have done anything any differently; I’m sure she never thought her daughter going to her best friend’s birthday party would result in her child’s death. However, what I am saying is, we as mothers have to be more vigilant over our daughters more than ever before. We have to take precautions and measures we never had to in recent history. We just do. Know where they’re going, with who, when they’ll be back, have other mothers numbers, friends numbers, drop them off, wait outside, drive around the block while you wait, text every 30 mins, or else I coming in to find you!

Secondly, I won’t write this and pretend like I have never been a carefree, boundary pushing teenager. In fact, I think this story resonates so much because I can remember being in some pretty sketchy situations alongside my friends as well as a youngin. Unlike, poor Kenneka, I survived (all glory to God). However, when I think about what made me escape the same fate as this sweet girl, the fact is that I grew up in a time when people weren’t entirely shitty. Even the bad guys had somewhat of a conscience in my time. Fast forward to these days, people are ruthless. The mixture of being high off all sorts of drugs, pills, etc; coupled with a dog eat dog mentally, this generation is just different. As I watched the Facebook live, the look on some of those kids faces are scary. Nothing phases them, or bothers them. Or at least that’s the way they want to appear. The chase of “turning up” supersede all moral judgement. It’s sad and scary at the same time to bare witness to.

Lastly, the question that a lot of people are asking this morning is; were any of those three or  four other girls Kenneka Jenkins with, really her friends? We don’t know what happened, but the fact that she was with four other girls, and no one knows what happened is disgusting. Let’s go with the version that these girls are offering and assume that they really don’t know what happened to this young lady. That in itself is a crime. We are so quick to call eachother “sis”, and egg  eachother on when it’s turn up twerking time; but we let things like this just happen?! If Kenneka was as drunk as is being reported, her more alert/sober friends should of took reign and gotten her to safety.

I just needed to get these things off my chest, because like I said this story has me bothered. This young girls life did not have to end like this. I pray her family, especially her mother finds some peace. May her soul rest in perfect peace.

Sidenote: I neglected to touch on the young men involved because, we don’t know what happened. I only touched on that of which there is evidence to support. Again, I don’t want to speculate. However, if those young men were involved the moral of this story is not ‘”friend or foe”, but rather “raise men that don’t rape and kill girls”. smh!!!

Product Review: Colorful Beaded Ball Earrings

Hi HUGs……

Just checking in to say hi. Lately, I have been busy. But a good productive busy. There has been order and purpose behind my busyness. Don’t you hate when you’re busy but chaos rules the day.  To avoid that chaotic energy I try to remember slow and steady is the way to go. Pressure can be healthy but too much can cloud your judgement. It’s best to just take time. Think quality not quantity.

Enough of that. Now on to some pretty cute earrings that I think would brighten up anyone’s day. They are beaded ball earrings that dangle. They really add a little sass to a look. Wear them with your hair up or down; either way its super cute.As summer closes out (😩) these earrings are the perfect flare to hold on to these last days of warm. The quality of these earrings is what sets them apart. Clearly, well crafted; these dangle earrings will damgle lightly and not weigh down the ear. If you like the bohemian; hand crafted jewelery vibe; these balled dangles will not disappoint. The colors of these earrings are so vibrant. I hope the pic captures that. It will sit nicely against any skin hue.

Purchase them here.

MY 5 HUG MUST-HAVES RIGHT NOW

GameFace Wipes:

Sometimes a shower right after the workout is not ideal. Perhaps, you have to make a quick stop at the store or the bank. I once had to run into Walmart after a workout and ended up a little too close to my boss in the check out line.  Let’s just say awkward. I looked and probably smelled musky. But the workout was worth it.  Kinda. Well with post workout wipes from GameFace, a quick freshening up is easy. Throw the lightly scented sturdy wipes in your gym bag and go. No more awkward post workout run ins.

RuckPack Energy Shots:

RuckPack HUG

Sometimes getting the workout in is impossible because tiredness wins. With #RuckPack Energy Shots (which have been featured on Shark Tank); the ingredients are natural and the outcome is full energy without shocking the nervous system. With yummy flavors like strawberry, citrus and berry it’s also delectable. Just pour into a cold glass of water or drink straight.

Try RuckPack here, and use the code BB105 for a 20% discount.

Mink Lashes:

I’m late on this one. Lashes are a must to enhance a beat face. However, if you’re going to do lashes; please opt for mink lashes. I didn’t know there was such a difference between mink lashes and artificial lashes; until I actually tried mink. Lashes should look and FEEL as natural as possible. Mink lashes are softer and FEEL almost weightless on the eyelids.

Try these Mink lashes for a reasonable price.

Filtered Water Bottle:

Water is a must. Lots of it. Daily. But who has time and money to keep running to the store for bottled water. Instead, I purchased a filtered water bottle that does all the work for me. I get endless bottles of fresh clean water and there is no plastic waste. Yayyyy! Try a filtered water bottle like this one.

Essential Oils And Diffuser:

For everything from aromatherapy to curing a headache; essential oils are the best. For each ailment we may suffer from, there’s an oil for that. I am having a great time researching and learning about essential oils and how to use them properly. Also, loving my oil diffuser to diffuse my favorite flavors of oils through out my home. It creates a great aroma that always lifts my energy.

Start with a simple but effective set of essential oils like this one.

10 Ways Apple Cider Vinegar Is Critical To Your #GloUp

Ladies, everything we do should in one way or another, contribute in large part to our #GloUp. While, the concept of a ” #GloUp” will differ from person to person, there are some fundamental bullet-points that are a must for any #GloUp to be official. One of those crucial bullet-points in particular, is having our health game on point. What we’ll be discussing today is almost synonymous with good health:  Apple Cidar Vinegar in its (organic) raw and unfiltered form is possibly one of the most vital natural health remedies to contribute to an increase in good health. ACV is one of those natural goodies that the healthiest person you know, probably swears by for many different reasons. In fact, ACV has anti-inflammatory properties that aides in everything from skin problems to weight loss.

Here are 10 key ways in which organic raw and unfiltered Apple Cidar Vinegar (with the mother) is critical to your #GloUp:

1. Detox Your Body

In this case, unfiltered ACV can act as a tonic for the liver and lymphatic; which can help detox your body.  Also, ACV helps balance your body’s pH and stimulates cardiovascular stimulation, bowel motility and lymphatic drainage. All of that leads to better health, and thereby instant #GloUp.

2. Natural Conditioner to Make Hair Shine

Hair can make or break ones #GloUp. Use ACV as a natural hair conditioner that after consistent use, makes the hair take on great shine.   Use  1 tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of water, in a bottle.  Pour this on your hair after shampooing. Remember consistency is key here. ***Be careful not to burn eyes with the acidic solution.***

3. Natural Teeth Whitener

A beautiful smile is detrimental to the #GloUp. It says, “Im happy from the inside out”. Enhance your smile with organic apple cider vinegar, by taking your index finger, dab in the ACV, and simple rub your teeth. The pH levels in the ACV will work overtime in no time to remove unwanted stains from the teeth.

4. Regulates Your Body’s pH

A body in alkaline is already way ahead of itself in the #GloUp game. This is because balancing the pH levels in the body, reduces the the risk of serious illnesses like cancer. ACV contains acetic acid, which dramatically has a alkaline effect on the body. Also, a body in alkaline state, has more energy; which will give us life in those #GloUp exercise sessions.

5. Can Support Weight Loss and Metabolism

Nothing screams #GloUp; like shedding some un-welcomed  LB’s. A study published in the Journal of Diabetes Care found that consuming apple cider vinegar could promote weight loss. There are several reasons ACV promotes fat loss, but one of those reasons includes that ACV reduces sugar cravings and improves detoxification. #YesPlease

6. Improve Body Odor:

Again with the pH, ACV helps control excessive body odor by regulating the pH of the skin, something most commercial deodorants and perfumes can’t claim. To use ACV as a deodorant simply wipe each armpit with a soaked cotton ball daily.

7.  Literally GLOing Skin:

Due to the pH balance of Apple Cidar Vinegar; which is close to our natural skins own pH balance, it makes for a great skin toner in that it does not harm our skin acid mantle (a protective layer of skin). Ditch those expensive chemically enhanced toners, and opt for the natural, yet potently effective ACV option. If you want to try ACV as a toner, just combine one part ACV with two to three parts water, you’ll want to add more water for very sensitive skin.Your skin will thank you. Add some coconut oil to your skin after you tone with ACV for best results.

8. Eliminates Varicose Veins:

Since ACV improves circulation in the vein walls and is a anti inflammatory, it is great for reducing bulging varicose veins. Make a mixture of apple cider vinegar and witch hazel, and rub on the area effected by varicose veins, in a circular motion; and you should see improvements in two weeks.

9. Fleeky from the inside out:

What good is it to look good and not feel good?!Remember, a proper #GloUp starts from inside the body. ACV can aide in balancing blood sugar and improving diabetes due to a special acid found in it, called acetic acid. This will ensure you well from within.

10. Say BYE to  Yeast Infections :

Really Candida; which is a parasite bacteria that if overgrown can lead to yeast infections, low energy, canker sores, and other less than cute conditions. Apple cider vinegar is a great tool in ridding candida, because of it’s ability to aide in promoting better digestion and an acid/alkaline balance more aligned with promoting healthy bacteria to once again thrive in the gut. Def a #GloUp moment.

2017 BET Awards Wrap Up: Fashion + Performances + More

Last night the annual BET Awards took place in the city of stars, Los Angeles, Ca. And all our fav’s came out to represent the culture of black music and entertainment.

Things sizzled from the red (actually grey) carpet, to the main stage.

There was no shortage of fashion moments. From the likes of Carbi B. to Lil Mama to La La Anthony, and everyone in between.

Actress Garcelle Beauvais kept things affordable in this Missguided frock that retails for only $240!! Gotta love.  You can grab it right here.

While everyone stood out in their own right, there was one trend that was definitely repeated often: The blonde bob.

Rocked by Cardi B, Blacc Chyna, Kat Graham, Tamar Braxton, Karrueche, the blonde bob took home the award for most worn hairstyle, for sure!

If we had to choose, we’d say Cardi rocked the hairstyle best. Although, we might be a bit biased (Bx stand up!!!)

Speaking of bombshell reality stars, there was no shortage of reality TV starlets. From Tammy Rivera, who kept it cute and casual in a wide leg white pant, polka dot white silk blouse, both Diane Von Furstenberg, and a saucy red lip; to fellow Love and Hip Hop Atlanta co star, Tommie, who went for a more risque look in a sheer dress (no coverage on the boobies) and long blonde pig tales. Also on hand was new mom and reality show vixen Joseline Hernandez, who clearly has snapped back.

While some looks were either really casual or really risque there were those few fav’s who manage to find the perfect balance of lady-like demur and sass:

How can we not discuss Remy Ma’s beaded blue fringed dress; a Karen Sabag number (same designer that  transformed Rem into a  princess for this years Grammys). I almost shed a tear. (More on Rem later)

La La, La La!!! All I can say is perfection. The dress , the messy high pony. The glam inspired dress is by designer Thai Nguyen Atelier. All we can say is DETAILS baby.

And then there was LeToya Luckett, who wore a floral flowy dress with leather details and a train that did not end!!

Not to be out done by the ladies, the fellas also came to kill em.

Future, gave me all the feels with the Mask On look he shared with his daughter. (love love love)

And Big Sean crushed the competition in a red crushed velvet casual joggers and matching jacket.

But it was The Migos and French Montana that let their feminine side shine in the floral.

#BlackLove was also in the air:

Big Sean and Jhene Aiko

Keyshia Ka’oir And Gucci:

And of course our fave #blacklove couple, Remy and Papoose:

The Performances:

The most talked about performance has certainly been the Xscape performance; in which, Kandi, Tiny and the other two ladies gave us all the nostalgia feels.

Then there was Mary J Blige. She made it clear that you gotta love yourself, before you love somebody else.

And the winners are…..
Hands down our favorite win of the night, went to Remy Ma, for Best Female Rapper. Her speech about second chances, coupled with her back story of  prison was just a moment. Are you DUMB??!!

There was also some international flavor in attendance with these African beauties; Ghana actress NanaAkua Addo, and South African Actress Nomzamo Mbatha, who wore a tribal inspired dress by Rich Factory.

And here are some other great looks for the night:
